Opening a US business bank account as a non-resident: how to actually pass KYC

Every week someone writes me the same sentence: 'Mercury rejected me and didn't say why.' And almost every time, when we review the case together, the answer was in plain sight. Here's what the system actually checks — and the checklist that gets you approved on the first try.

You weren't rejected for being foreign

Foreigners with approved accounts number in the millions. What the system rejects is something else: inconsistency. The control is called KYC — Know Your Customer — and it works by comparing everything against everything.

What they check (even if they don't tell you)

1 · Total consistency across documents. Your LLC's name must be IDENTICAL in the Articles, the EIN letter (CP 575) and the application — down to the comma in "LLC". The address you declare must match everywhere. One small mismatch = silent rejection.

2 · A business explainable in one sentence. "I sell design services to US and European clients" gets approved. "International business consulting of various kinds" smells like money laundering to an algorithm. Concrete description, a website that backs it, realistic expected volumes.

3 · Your identity and digital footprint. Valid passport, verification selfie, and sometimes a look at your online presence. If your application says "e-commerce" and no store exists anywhere, the algorithm doubts.

4 · Your industry. Crypto, gambling, adult content, CBD and several others are excluded or restricted at most fintechs. Check the prohibited list BEFORE applying — an application in an excluded industry is a guaranteed rejection that leaves a record.

The three real options

  • Mercury — the anchor account: full-featured, no monthly fee, strict KYC, and a restricted-country list that changes. Verify yours before applying.
  • Wise Business — the multi-currency bridge: USD, EUR and GBP with local details and cheap conversion. Best as a complement, not your only account.
  • Relay — the serious plan B: up to 20 sub-accounts; the logical next attempt if Mercury said no over country or industry.

If you were already rejected

Don't blindly retry. Identify the probable cause — country, industry, inconsistency, vague description — fix it, and apply to a DIFFERENT fintech with the corrected file. Repeating the same application in the same place rarely changes the outcome.
